Harvester Termites

On the 30th May 2015 at Line Drift on the Keiskamma river some harvester termites, Hodotermes mossambicus were found foraging in the veld near the plinth commemorating Line Drift Post.   The site was at 33 03'S 27 12'E on the 1:50,000 map 3327AA Peddie.   This is the first time that I have seen them in the Eastern Cape.  The distribution map for the species given in Coaton & Sheasby 1975 ( Cimbebasia 3:105-108 ) only shows two maps : 3227AA and 3227BC, in the area south of 30'S and east of 27'E which encompasses most of the East Cape.    As the distribution of the harvester termite and bat-eared fox Otocylon megalotis have a near perfect overlap, the fox might also occur at Line Drift.
